i need a blogging education, for blogs sake.

I’m evaluating a multi-media course on blogging from the folks at Simpleology. For a while, they’re letting you snag it for free if you post about it on your blog.

It covers:

  • The best blogging techniques.
  • How to get traffic to your blog.
  • How to turn your blog into money.

I’ll let you know what I think once I’ve had a chance to check it out. Meanwhile, go grab yours while it’s still free.

Sleight of Hand vs Self Working Magic Tricks

One of the debates you may come upon in the magic world concerns “self-working” magic tricks and whether or not these tricks are just as good as those requiring difficult sleights and moves, or if they are rather a cop-out to “real” magic.

To explore this, let’s first define what is meant by “self-working.”

Obviously, no trick works itself; it has to be performed and the performer usually has to do something - even if it’s pushing a hidden button - to achieve the effect. Self-working tricks are a mainstay of magic shops, especially those that cater to beginners. A seven-year-old just starting out in magic might be a little intimidated at the thought of performing a coin vanish, but will jump at the chance to use the simplest iterations of “egg-in-vase” or a change bag. As for whether or not the use of these tricks denotes a lack of skill, the answer is that it depends.

Magicians who perform for children often use large bright-colored props that are fairly self-working. The reason for this is that a true children’s magician knows that her performance is really what sells the trick to her audience. Thus she can take a mechanically simple prop like the magic coloring book and turn it into several minutes of wonder and amazement for her young audience.

Mentalists, especially those who work on stage also benefit from simple self-working props - and intense preparation! Much of the mentalist’s work is done before the show and thus he has no wish to risk it on the failure of an overhand pass or some such move.

Still it is true that in some cases, self-working tricks are merely substitutes for the hard work necessary to become a fine performer. For those thinking they are taking the easy way out, it’s good to remember that you’re going to have to dispose of that gimmick somewhere, somehow, and it is probably going to involve some sneaky move, i.e. a sleight.

The sleight, or the move, is really where most serious magicians begin their training. The great teacher Harlan Tarbell began his revered Course in Magic with a lesson on simple coin palming and vanishes.

The practice of sleights, be they with coins, cards, or sponge balls turns someone who merely likes to “do magic” into a real worker of miracles to her audience. And odds are, the better the effect, the more likely it is that there is going to be a sleight or a move of some kind involved in the execution of the effect.

So can you practice good magic without knowing anything about sleight-of-hand?

Certainly; a couple of situations were mentioned above. But it’s fair to say that you will really miss out on a large part of the art - the craft that is magic performance - by limiting yourself to self-working tricks.

So if nothing else, find a nice beginner’s book on cards or coins and work on your vanishes or double-lifts. You’ll not only find the mastery of these sleights fulfilling, but you’ll also enjoy the access you now have to the vast array of magical effects that have been produced over the years that rely on these classic moves.

SINFUL by Wayne Houchin (Criss Angels Masterminds)

This is definitly not my favorite effect but it was my first exposure to Wayne Houchin. I do enjoy the DVD though it shows a different kind of Criss angel. the only reason i am not a fan of this effect is it just does not fit my style. I love how it looks for other people and i love the simplistic method but i just dont see it working for me.

Another downside to this effect i see is there are hardly any tin cans around anymore. (at least were i am). 90% of the time i see people drinking out of plastic soda bottles. the only places i see tin cans around are at sporting events and a selected few other events.

Sinful is an Impromptu quarter through a soda can effect. you slam the coin the the soda and open it up to show the signed coin on the inside. it is impressive.

The production quality of this DVD is very good. it is shot at Criss angels managers department. THE FIRM. Criss sits down with Wayne who created the effect and they both teach it to you step by step. Criss does not do a lot of talking during the teaching but he does give you his hints and tips on how to preform this effect and make it your own.

After the teaching of the effects wayne preforms the effect for you in full so you can see it in comparison to Criss Angels clip of his presentation shown earlier in the dvd.

INcluded also on this DVD is a preview of the next DVD were Criss teaches his levitation. and a preview of sason one of mindfreak.

Also on this DVD David Baram Criss’s manager interviews him. I very much enjoy watching this interview because it sheds quite a bit of light on criss and why he does what he does.

For the effectivness and impromptu nature of this trick i would rate it and the DVD a 9/10.

This is A DVD i would recomend to people IF they do a lot of street preforming as it is perfect for that Venue.

I do have a suggestion though. Do not go into this effect thinking you will find someone on the street with an unopened soda. You are not going to. and even if you do odds are someone is not going to hand it over. your best bet is to be near somewhere you can easily buy a can of soda (the DVD tells you which ones are best) or bring your own and let the spectator completly examine it.

7 Tips For Performing Street Magic

If you want to start performing magic tricks to strangers in streets bars and clubs, follow these tips and get the most out of every magic performance.

1. Dress Casually

A lot of people will tell you that to come across as a serious magician, you have to dress well. While that is true for restaraunt work, when performing in streets and bars, you want to appear casual. Just a pair of jeans and a shirt or T-shirt is perfect. This way you blend in, looking like the average person will make people expect little from you, which elevates the surprise factor when you do something amazing.

2. Choose Your Spectators

When you start performing regularly in the ‘real world’, you will face a lot of rejection, by rejection I mean people who have no interest in seeing what you do. However, there are measures you can take to decrease this ‘rejection’. Never approach people who look busy, if someone is marching through the street, or in a bar in a deep conversation with their partner, its unlikely they want to be interupted. The next thing my experience has taught me, avoid older people and groups of males, don’t ask me why but old people seem to not want to see magic tricks, and groups of males almost always feel challenged by the fact you know something they don’t, and are prime cadidates for trying to ruin your magic.

3. Play Yourself Down

When I first approach spectators, I always like to act real casual, take everything slow and smoothe. This will make you appear as though your not even trying, which will amaze your spectators even more, that way, they will think, “what could he do if he actually tried”.

4. Learn Your Tricks

This one is pretty obvious but do not perform any trick until you have practiced it well. Although performing is the best practice you will get, make sure you have the mechanics down before you start, there is nothing more embarassing than forgetting what to do next in the middle of a routine.

5. Structure Your Performance

Make sure your routine is well structured, this means that each trick builds on the last, has an extra surprise factor or is just simply more amazing. You don’t want to start your routine with your strongest trick because the rest of your magic will just seem mediocre, build as you go and leave the best to last!

6. No means NO!

If you approach someone and they say they don’t want to see any magic, do not continue to insist, you don’t want to harrass people. Just politely say ‘Ok, thats fine’ and move along, they could be having a bad day and if someone is cheeky to you or insults you it may dent your confidence for the rest of your performance.

7. Get A Tip

The easiest way I find to get a tip is to finish with a trick using money. Borrow some cash from a spectator and use it in your final trick. Often, if you where entertaining, people will tell you to keep the money, or usually, you can just put it in your pocket and say nothing, they usually just let you have it. This is the most hassle free way of getting a tip, because usually, I don’t like to ask for it.

Keep in mind, that there is a lot more to performing in the street than what I have outlined above. But if you follow this advice, you will be sure to make a success out of most of your street magic performances.
