me and my brother are doing a card trick and the directions say to cut the pack. What does that mean?

It means cutting the deck. It’s just another way to shuffle it further. You lay it with the numbers down on a table and remove half of it, then put the bottom half on top of the first half. It doesn’t have to be halves, you can cut it as many times as you want.

Taking some random portion from the top of the deck and switching them with the cards on the bottom. It’s a way to ensure there is no bottom-dealing or that the cards haven’t been arranged for the benefit of the dealer or other players.
