Is there a free program to trick comp. to make it think I have installed another graphics card?

Not exactly. What video card do you have? What is the exact error Silent Hill gives? Even if you do get it installed, it may run horribly or not at all.

Your problem is probably that your current video driver does not support a newer version of DirectX that Silent Hill requires and updating the driver just might correct that issue.
