In the magic trick about multiplying sponge rabbits, how does the magician do it?

If the first sponge is somewhat dry at first, it could be that water was added to it. When the sponge expands the multiple sponges that are stuck together become unstuck. So there were probably originally multiple sponges stuck together that looked like one sponge.
