How do you do this magic trick?
Posted by: dmin in Performing Arts, tags: Heart, Hearts, Volunteersedgar asked:
Some magicians ask people to name any card. For example, the four of hearts. He then looks in the volunteers eyes and says, “It’s red…It is a heart…it’s the four of hearts.” Is it all scripted, or is there a way?
i should have clarified. The magician doesn’t actually hand them a deck of cards. He asks people to THINK of a card. From there, he predicts it.

Most likely a trick deck. Easiest way I would know of.
reflection on eyeglasses or even on their eyes
scripted, but the magician doesn’t know which eye to look into. So they have a 50/50 chance. Left eyes are ALWAYS going to show diamonds, so you have to take that into account.
Don’t know. The ex said there was someone in the pub who poured a pint of beer in a newspaper, it disappeared then he poured it back in a glass in front of people. Then he produced a potato or grapefruit from nowhere. Slight of hand but so gifted. Amazing and very clever.
this is the guy you need to know all about and see. he is fantastic
I take it there is no deck of cards involved…
There are a number of solutions to this type of stunt.
The first comes from suggestion. There was one famous stunt like this performed in the US where a number of advertising execs where taken to a building and asked to come up with a campaign for a product. There was a sealed envelope in the room throughout the experiment. When they were done with their presentation the magician revealed to them an almost identicle presentation in the envelope. Turns out throughout their independent journeys to the building they were taken by the same route via key suggestions in certain bill boards, signs, events, that were somehow connected to the product they needed to market. Genius! You need more than a degree in psychology to set something like that up.
Perhaps the power of suggestion is used in this case.
The other way is simply understanding that the eyes can give away a whole lot more than we realise. By learning to read people well you can tell by their reactions whether a guess is accurate or not. i.e. It’s red… No. Black. Hi/low. Odd even… etc. Process of deduction, but far too untrustworthy and messy.
The most likely explanation is that the individual does not realise he chose anything else and that through the power of suggestion in that moment the magician literally forces the picture of the card into the persons mind. Either the experience is so overwhelming they didn’t realise they chose anything else once the card is suggested or the image of the the 4 of hearts is suggested mentally by the magician when he asks him to think of a card. It sounds unlikely, but you’ll be amazed at how different cards carry different energy signatures. They do ‘feel’ different somehow. Remember playing cards derive from the ancient Tarot cards and they are infamous for the most stunningly appropriate card appearing at the right… or wrong moment!
If all this sounds far fetched it may be because I practice card magic and believe my own banter far too much.
But suggestion is a powerful thing.
Think which is the BEST card for you.
Keep whatever the ANSWER is in your mind.
Anything from one to TEN or a picture card.
Keep your mind single POINTedly on that card.
Do you believe in magic….?
as a magician myself I know of several ways this trick can be done. One way is called a double thick or a short card. When places in a deck and the cards are riffled it will show longer than any other card. If you riffle fast enough it is the only card you can see clearly. Another way is through outs (your card is a red card is it not? “no” like I said, it is not). The third is just probability, there are several cards that are chosen more than others (the ace of spades is the most common one chosen). All of theese methods can backfire, and is why you probably saw this trick on TV. The times the trick doesnt work can be out taken. It is too risky for a normal magician to perform.
